Opening a lake cottage for the season is exciting, and the deck is usually the first place everyone wants to be. Use this spring deck checklist to make sure your deck is safe, clean and ready before the first guests or renters arrive.
Safety First
After a Michigan winter, start with a careful walk-around.
- Push on every railing to check for wobble
- Look for loose or popped nails and screws
- Check stairs for cracked treads or loose stringers
- Probe the ends of boards and posts with a screwdriver; soft wood is a sign of rot
- Make sure the deck still feels solid where it attaches to the house
Anything that feels loose or soft should be fixed before the deck is used. Read more in our deck safety warning signs guide.
Clean and Refresh
- Sweep off leaves, sand and debris from winter
- Clear the gaps between boards so water can drain
- Wash the deck to remove mildew, pollen and dirt
- Rinse off the house siding and railings near the deck
Check the Finish
Do the water test: sprinkle water on the boards and see whether it beads or soaks in. If it soaks in, or if the boards look gray, rough or blotchy, the deck needs a fresh coat of stain. Spring is one of the best times to do it, before the summer heat and the busy season.
Get It Guest-Ready
- Put furniture back on pads or feet
- Set planters on stands so water can drain
- Replace any burned-out deck or stair lights
- Check that the grill area is clean and away from railings
- Leave a note for renters about cleaning up grease and spills
For Rental Owners
A well-kept deck shows up in listing photos and reviews. Scheduling a yearly spring cleaning and a maintenance coat every couple of years keeps the deck looking its best with far less work than a full restoration. If your property is in South Haven, Harbor Country or Saugatuck, we can work around your booking calendar.
