A deck full of family and friends on a summer evening puts real weight on the structure. Lakeshore decks also live in a tough environment of moisture, sun, sand and freeze-thaw cycles, which can quietly weaken wood and hardware over time. Here are eight deck safety warning signs to check every spring.
1. Wobbly or Loose Railings
Push firmly on railings and posts. Any movement is a warning sign, especially on raised decks. Railings must hold the weight of someone leaning or falling against them.
2. Soft or Spongy Wood
Press a screwdriver into boards, joists and posts, especially near the ground and where water collects. If it sinks in easily, the wood may be rotting.
3. Where the Deck Meets the House
The board that attaches the deck to the house carries a lot of load. Look for gaps, rust streaks, rot or signs that water is getting behind it. If anything looks wrong here, have it checked by a qualified contractor.
4. Rusted or Missing Hardware
Look at nails, screws, bolts and metal connectors. Heavy rust, missing fasteners or corroded joist hangers weaken the structure. Humid lakeshore air speeds up corrosion.
5. Cracked or Split Boards
Small surface checks are normal in wood, but deep cracks, split board ends and boards that flex underfoot should be replaced.
6. Unstable Stairs
Stairs take a beating. Check that treads are solid, stringers are not cracked or rotted, and the handrail is secure and easy to grip.
7. Mildew, Algae and Slippery Surfaces
Green or black growth makes boards slippery and holds moisture in the wood. Cleaning and refinishing the deck removes it and makes the surface safer.
8. Poor Lighting
Dark stairs and edges are a common cause of falls. Stair and post lights make the deck safer and more inviting at night.
What to Do If You Find a Problem
Surface problems like mildew, gray wood, splinters and peeling stain are exactly what a deck restoration fixes. Structural concerns such as rot in posts or joists or a failing connection to the house should be inspected by a qualified contractor before the deck is used. We point out any concerns we see during every estimate. Getting ready for the season? Use our spring deck checklist.
